Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman, unknowingly contributed to one of the most significant advancements in modern medicine. In 1951, her cancer cells were harvested without her consent, given the name HeLa, and became the first immortal human cell line. HeLa cells proved capable of unlimited replication, transforming medical research. They contributed to major breakthroughs such as the polio vaccine, cancer treatments, and in vitro fertilization.
